Radio AutoDJ and playlists

Keep a station on air 24/7, schedule shows, and hand over cleanly between live and automated.

AutoDJ keeps the stream alive when no human is broadcasting. Getting the handover right is what makes a station feel professional.

How it works

AutoDJ watches your mount point. When a live source connects, it steps aside. When the live source disconnects, AutoDJ resumes from where it left off. Listeners never hear silence.

Set it up

  1. In /panel/radio, open the mount and enable AutoDJ.

  2. Upload tracks to the media library (or point us at a directory).

  3. Create one or more playlists:

    • General rotation — the everyday mix.

    • Genre/daypart — different music for mornings vs evenings.

    • Jingles/idents — short clips inserted between tracks.

  4. Assign playlists to a schedule so different hours play different content.

Scheduling shows

Define blocks (e.g. "Mon 09:00–12:00 = live show; else general rotation"). The streamer switches automatically. For a live show, the presenter connects with the source password at the scheduled time and AutoDJ yields.

Crossfading and gaps

Set a small crossfade so tracks do not butt abruptly. Avoid zero-gap settings that clip track tails. If you hear silence between tracks, check that your playlist has enough tracks to cover the schedule and that files are not corrupt.

Handover tips for presenters

  • Connect slightly before your slot so AutoDJ hands over cleanly.

  • Set your encoder to keep a short buffer; dropouts usually come from the DJ's connection, not the server.

  • When you finish, disconnect cleanly rather than killing the encoder, so AutoDJ resumes promptly.

Maintaining the library

  • Keep filenames and tags tidy — they become your now-playing text.

  • Remove duplicates and low-quality rips.

  • Watch disk usage; a large library plus stream logs can fill a small disk — see Monitoring your services.
